The West African Examination Council on Friday released the results of the 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, which turned out to be the best in ten years, as more than half of the candidates who sat for the exam passed.
Announcing the 2016 results at the national office of the Council on Friday, the Head, Nigeria National Office, WAEC, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, said 878,040 candidates, representing 52.97 per cent of the 1,544,234 candidates who sat for the examination, had credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English.
He noted that it was an improvement to the 31.28 per cent and 38.68 per cent of candidates who passed the five subjects in the exam in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Meanwhile, on request, an information made available to one of our correspondents on Friday by the Head, Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Demianus Ojijeogu, showed that the Council recorded 36.57 per cent pass in five subjects including Maths and English in 2013; 38.81 per cent pass in 2012; 24.94 per cent in 2010; 25.99 per cent in 2009 and 25.54 per cent in 2007.
According to Adenipekun, while 1,393,907 candidates representing 90.26 per cent had their results fully released, 158,718 candidates, representing 9.74 per cent, have a few of their results still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination. He, however, said such errors were being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently.
He pointed out that the results of 137,295 candidates, representing 8.89 per cent were being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice, adding that the cases were being investigated and reports of the investigation would be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council in due course and the committee’s decisions would be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.
Adenipekun said candidates would be able to assess their results as from today, adding that 133 visually impaired candidates sat for the examination. He said 23 of them, representing 17.29 per cent, obtained credit in five subjects, including Mathematics and English.
